Borini a derby day doubt

Fabio Borini will undergo a fitness test ahead of Sunday’s Wear-Tyne derby, according to the club’s website.

The 24-year-old Italian came off the bench to score the winner at the Stadium of Light during his first spell at the club, before scoring from the spot at St James’ Park in the 3-0 victory later that season.

During his press conference, manager Sam Allardyce told the media “There are no fresh injuries other than Fabio Borini who picked up a knock against West Brom”.

Borini would be a big miss to the side. Despite being yet to score, the Italian lifts the crowd and his driving force is useful in counter attacks.

One man who will be back in the team is Ola Toivonen. The Swede missed the 1-0 defeat at the Hawthorns after picking up a groin injury on international duty. The 6ft 2 1/2 midfielder adds height, pace and creativity to the side, crucial to the Black Cats with their poor goal-scoring record. Sebastian Coates and Jeremain Lens return from suspension and are also in the provisional squad.

Predicted Lineup:

Subs: Mannone, van Aanholt, Coates, Larsson, Gomez, Defoe, Fletcher
