Transfer windows are all about strengthening the depth and the quality of the squad – it could very easily be argued that the weakest positions in the Sunderland team are found on either flank of the defence.
Patrick van Aanholt has occupied the left-back slot of the side for a reasonable amount of time now and, despite his commendable attacking prowess, he’s not too good when it comes to his defensive duties.
This could quite easily be said about the right-hand side of defence, also. DeAndre Yedlin’s loan spell at the Stadium of Light came to an end this summer and a move for the American has not been made yet. Billy Jones is also there but questions are very much raised when it comes to his Premier League credentials.
There are players that can deputise in these positions but natural, high standard full-backs are simply necessary.
