‘Correctly chalked off’ – Ex-PGMOL chief delivers Sunderland VAR verdict

Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett supported disallowing Dan Ballard’s strike. Sunderland secured a 1-1 draw away at Brentford on Saturday. Referee Thomas Bramall ruled out the opening goal following a lengthy review. VAR officials judged Kevin Danso obstructed Caoimhin Kelleher from an offside position.

Refining Attacking Set-Piece Routines

Hackett spoke about the contentious incident this weekend. “The goal was, however, correctly chalked off.”

The decision highlights a clear tactical issue for Régis Le Bris. While an adjusted tactical approach secured an away point, attacking routines require immediate refinement. Runners blocking the goalkeeper must hold legal starting positions. Failing to do so risks more costly overturned goals as officials apply strict interference rules.

Hackett admitted Kelleher could have moved but lacked the necessary vision. “He’s no chance of seeing it; his pathway is blocked by the player who’s in an offside position, so I think that was a relatively easy decision.”

Dealing With Costly VAR Delays

The prolonged four-minute review initially sparked frustration among supporters. Sunderland ultimately equalised late through an Enzo Le Fée penalty. That crucial spot-kick followed a foul on Wilson Isidor inside the penalty area. Keane Lewis-Potter dragged the striker to the turf to concede the foul.

Le Bris must now drill legal blocking movements before Hull City visit the Stadium of Light in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
