Sunderland’s position on Chemsdine Talbi is now clear. As of this update on 19 September 2026, Régis Le Bris says the Talbi status is settled for both player and club. Doubt no longer hangs over his long-term future at the Stadium of Light.
The clarity follows interest in Talbi during the summer transfer window, according to Read AFC Sunderland. It also comes just days after the winger scored the winning goal in Sunderland’s cup victory over Hull City.

The winger stays at Sunderland. Le Bris says there is no gap between the player’s thinking and the club’s. That settles a question that had hung over the squad since the summer window closed.
“Now we have clarity, from his side, from our side, and we’re looking forward,” Le Bris said, as first reported by Read AFC Sunderland in the original Talbi update. His future had been an open question for weeks. Now it isn’t.

That clarity arrived just days after Talbi gave Sunderland reason to feel good about him on the pitch. Sunderland beat Hull City 1-0 in the cup. Talbi scored the only goal in the 71st minute, continuing the rotation plan Le Bris had set out in our Hull City preview.
Substitute Thomas Meunier played the pass that sent Talbi through. The winger chipped goalkeeper Dillon Phillips to settle the contest. It had the feel of a cup night Sunderland fans remember fondly, in the spirit captured in a past preview against Wycombe Wanderers.
Le Bris was straightforward about his satisfaction afterwards. “Yeah, I’m pleased,” he said, reflecting on both the goal and Talbi’s overall contribution to the win.

Before that win, the picture around Talbi had been less settled. Le Bris had acknowledged throughout the summer that nothing could be ruled out while the transfer window remained open.
“I repeat, in the transfer window, anything can happen,” he said at the time, according to Read AFC Sunderland. Interest in Talbi was real. No formal move followed.
Le Bris also explained why a player in Talbi’s position might have weighed his options. “I think he had a good season last year but you can take a few steps and think about your future, it’s possible,” he said. That context now sits in the past. The Talbi status is resolved on both sides.
What happens next
Sunderland were preparing to host Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday. Talbi is available now that his future is settled.
Le Bris will make that assessment without Romaine Mundle. The winger faces several months on the sidelines with a severe knee injury. No return date has been confirmed.
