Sunderland ‘entertained’ Exeter in the second round of the Capital One Cup last night in a 6-3 thriller. The Black Cats were ruthless going forward and toothless in defence, with the league two side equalising twice in the first half.
Dick Advocaat’s side eventually took control of the game in the second period, and in the end they ran out comfortable winners. Jack Rodwell’s second of the night, Jermaine Defoe’s third of the night, and a goal from Duncan Watmore secured the win for the Black Cats in the second half. The Wearsiders have now conceded 11 goals in their opening four games of the season, a return which has alarmed Dick Advocaat and fans alike, who both are growing increasingly frustrated at lack of signings with just 6 days left of the transfer window.
Sunderland were rewarded for their lackluster performance with a third-round tie at home to Manchester City, the side who defeated the Black Cats in the 2013 final.
